5 NLP Techniques to Overcome Anxiety and Overthinking

Practical NLP techniques you can use right now to quiet anxious thoughts, break the cycle of overthinking, and reclaim your mental calm.

Anxiety and overthinking are two of the most common challenges people bring to NLP coaching — and for good reason. The mind has a remarkable ability to create suffering out of things that have not happened yet, replaying 'what if' scenarios on a loop that leaves you exhausted and paralysed.

The good news is that anxiety and overthinking are not character flaws. They are patterns — and patterns can be changed. Here are five NLP-based techniques that can help you start shifting them right now.

1. The Swish Pattern

The Swish Pattern is one of NLP's most well-known techniques for interrupting unwanted thought patterns. It works by replacing a triggering mental image with an empowering one at the neurological level.

Start by identifying the image that appears in your mind just before the anxious feeling begins — perhaps a mental picture of something going wrong, or a specific scenario you keep replaying. Then create a vivid image of how you want to feel instead: calm, grounded, capable. Practice rapidly replacing the first image with the second until the anxious image loses its charge.

2. Changing Submodalities

Every thought you have has qualities — or 'submodalities' — that affect how much emotional charge it carries. A thought that causes anxiety might appear as a large, bright, close-up image in your mind. By consciously altering these qualities — making the image smaller, more distant, dimmer — you can dramatically reduce its emotional impact.

Try this: when an anxious thought arises, notice where it seems to be located in your visual field, how large it is, and how bright. Then mentally push it further away, shrink it, and drain the colour from it. Notice how the feeling changes.

3. The Dissociation Technique

Anxiety tends to keep you fully associated — inside the experience, feeling every sensation intensely. Dissociation is the practice of mentally stepping outside the experience and observing it from a detached perspective.

You cannot solve a problem from inside the same emotional state that created it. Stepping back — even mentally — changes everything.

Imagine floating out of your body and watching yourself from a distance, as if you are watching a film. Notice how the emotional intensity drops when you are observing the scene rather than living it.

4. Anchoring a Calm State

Anchoring is the NLP equivalent of training a reflex. By consistently pairing a physical gesture (like pressing your thumb and forefinger together) with a deeply calm state, you can create a neurological trigger that brings back that calm state on demand.

To build your anchor, recall a specific time when you felt completely calm and at peace. Relive it fully — the sights, sounds, and sensations. At the peak of that feeling, apply your chosen gesture. Repeat this process several times until the anchor is established. Then test it when you feel anxious.

5. Reframing

Anxiety often comes from the meaning we assign to events — the story we tell about what something means for us. Reframing is the practice of consciously choosing a different, more empowering meaning.

Instead of asking 'What if this goes wrong?', ask yourself: 'What if this goes right? What would I learn even if it didn't? How might this challenge be preparing me for something better?' The facts of the situation don't change — but the meaning you give them does.

Taking It Further

These techniques are powerful starting points, but they work best when applied with guidance from a trained NLP coach who can help you identify the specific structure of your anxiety and apply the right tools for your unique pattern.
